Either at present or in the future, human being will run into a tough situation which includes the heavy population, the shortage of the natural resource as well as the environment contaminated. Among these problems, the geo-environment problem should be highlighted. On one hand, the geo-environment is the essential background for the people's life and all the engineering activities; on the other hand, the geo-environment is fragile and hard to recycle. Therefore , in the documentary of implementing the eleventh Five Years Project, there has been an emphasis that china should insist on the principle of the keeping the economy being in harmony with the population , natural resource and the environment.

   China is a country with geo-hazards happening frequently, these hazards caused millions of RMB damage to many constructions. The geo-hazards often happened in the western mountain areas and the mid-eastern areas with complex landforms. From the survey result, we have almost millions of the geo-hazards (including the potential ones),they are distributing around the country. And every year the number of the geo-hazards is increasing.The areas of the geo-hazards distributing is about 45% of the whole country.The most dangerous areas are in the southwest and the northwest.In these areas, there have been happened 34,000 very serious geo-hazards. These caused thousands of people died and the direct loss of 80-100 billion RMB also caused great damage to the roads and equipments.In the 80' s of 20th century, more than 100 geo-hazards which caused 30 or more death or the loss of money reached 10 millions happened in the mainland. Here are some examples,the 1980 rockfall,1982,1985,1989,1991,1994,1995,1996,2000,2001, 2003,2003,2004,2005.These hazards caused very serious social problems in security.Some of these are caught the notification by international society.(for instance,the burst of the weir embolism lake which is formatted by landslide occurred in Yigong, Tibet 2000 ,killed 30 Indians,100 people were missing, 50,000 people lost their homes).
    Due to the very special geo-environment in China,the geohazards are happened extremely frequently.To consider from the geodynamics，from the planetary dynamics view,the geoenvironment since Quaternary is controlled by the Qingzang plateau fast up-lifting process.At the same time, the three main rivers ( Yellow river,chuangjiang river, Lancangjiang river) are fiercely eroding down.As a result,the China's landform of 3 stages is formed.These tectonic progresses also cause the stress converging along the edge of the plateau, which can be the main reasons of the formation of the geohazards, such as the landslides, cracks,etc.

    The threaten to the main construction projects by the geohazards:In 90's,20th century, China had come to a stage of the rapid developing.There were many giant projects on-scheduling, such as the“send the gas from the western to the eastern”,“send the water resource from the southern to the northern”and the“build the high railway net”,etc.These projects can not avoid of threatening by the geohazards.Because of the activities of today's human,the plant is being reconstructed,and some problems come out to us that the natural's compensating ability can not follow the pace of the resource's destroying speed. we should be aware of this tough question.

    The government pays highly attention to the geohazards and makes efforts to prevent them：In the early 90's,the nation has set special financial aids to solute the problems which are caused by the geohazards. Also, the government become making many rules and regulations to confine the geoenvironment prevention works.

    We are still facing the big challenging on the dealing with the geohazards:With the geohazards happening uncertainly, as well as the formation processes are hard to figure out clearly. The current skills and methods are far behind the problems. Therefore, we have to work hard to study on such tough problems, especially on the hazards which are located in the southwest of China .

    The progress in the nature science is providing a big opportunity to the system's establishing of the geohazards prevention:The modern science has established a general idea of the “Earth System Science”.To represent as a important part in this system, the study on the hazards' prevention is becoming developed, and the study will definitely have a bright future with many scholars' great efforts.
